Brent M. Reitman thinks of himself as “the extra person at the dinner table” when he meets with a potential client. As a medical malpractice lawyer, he listens to family members as they discuss how a death or serious injury has affected their lives.
Brent is part of every trial at LCTR. By way of background, Brent began trying cases while he was still in law school as a Certified Legal Intern at the Office of the State Attorney. From there, Brent went on to become an Assistant State Attorney for the Seventeenth Judicial Circuit where he earned a plethora of courtroom experience protecting the citizens of Broward County. He continued these efforts continuing his trial practice representing victims of medical negligence and wrongful death cases. Brent has tried over 75 cases to verdict. Through his trial work, Brent’s peers have recognized his excellence by naming him to Florida Super Lawyers Rising Stars List every year since 2016; he has been recognized in “BEST LAWYERS” by his peers; National Trial Lawyers Top 100; Lawyers of Distirction, and has consistently held an AV Rating by Martindale Hubbell, the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethical standards.
As a result of his vast trial experience Brent has, at a very young age, achieved Board Certifications in two separate areas of trial law, both Criminal Trial Law (2016) and Civil Trial Law (2020), a distinction held by very few lawyers within the State of Florida. He was also elected as the President of Fort Lauderdale’s American Board of Trial Advocates for 2020, while also serving as the “Trial Chair” for the Broward County Bar Association.
Brent’s dedication to his clients and willingness to battle in the courtroom has earned him membership in Trial Masters, an elite association of attorneys who have taken hundreds of cases to trial. He is also a member of the Million Dollar and Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum, a prestigious group of lawyers who have won large verdicts and settlements. Brent been recognized for top-100 verdicts, both in Florida and Nationally.
Like his partners at LCTR, Brent does not say yes to every potential client. The Fort Lauderdale law firm is very selective about which clients it represents. It vets each potential case carefully to determine whether it fits the type of lawsuits that the firm pursues and sets clear expectations for those seeking redress of their damages. Unlike other legal practices where personal injury attorneys often operate independently, the four medical malpractice lawyers at LCTR collectively determine the course of litigation process.
Once they agree, they work as a team. A client receives the wisdom and knowledge not just of Brent, but Scott S. Liberman, Ivan F. Cabrera and Sean F. Thompson. Together, they have decades of experience in the law and courtroom protocols. Each applies his talents to building the strongest case possible in anticipation that it will go to trial knowing that best chance to achieve a just result for their client, is if they take on every case as if it will need to be taken to trial.
Brent is the primary point of contact for his clients and understands that the law is just a portion of the client-attorney relationship. Brent puts himself in their place. How do they feel? What do they want? He responds by treating them the way he would want to be treated if their positions were reversed. Brent is mindful that when a new client comes through the door, he is usually meeting them after the worst, or one of the worst days in their lives, or the lives of a loved one.
Brent knows that his clients’ lives have changed in a dramatic way. They have questions and worries. His job is to address those concerns while pursuing the facts that will produce the strongest case to achieve a just result on behalf of his clients. In effect, their worries become his worries.
Brent comes from a family of physicians and draws upon his unique understanding of the medical profession and his own medical knowledge base in advocating for his clients. Brent has a specialty knowledge base in injuries related to the central nervous system, specifically dealing with brain and spinal cord injuries and routinely works with some of the top physicians and experts in the world when dealing with these types of neurological injuries.
The legal team at LCTR routinely hires world renowned medical experts to review each case and assist them in not only evaluating the actions and/or inactions of health care providers which lead to the injuries or damages complained of, but also to understand the potential defenses which will inevitably be created by defendants in attempt to avoid responsibility for their negligent actions The development of these complex cases can take years, so Brent is realistic with clients and their loved ones from the beginning: The process will not be simple or short.
Once a case is settled, the connection often endures. Brent keeps in touch with former clients. They share updates in their lives and he listens, just as he did the first day they stepped into his office.
